Opening in 2018, the Supervised Consumption Site operated to mitigate overdose deaths and health harms caused by the toxic drug supply. Providing a hygienic space to consume drugs, overdose response, and access to wraparound health care diverted thousands of people from emergency services and saved millions in health care dollars.
During consumption service, participants received health education and overdose monitoring.
The post-consumption space provided continued monitoring, allowing people to recover from consumption effects in a safe, indoor space.
Ongoing connection and trust-building with a team of compassionate harm reduction workers and nurses supported those who had been marginalized or discriminated against to re-engage with recovery goals, health care services, and social supports.
The SHCHC Supervised Consumption Site closed its doors on June 12, 2026, following defunding by the Ministry of Health.
